Tearfund is a Christian charity that partners with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries. They aim to tackle poverty through sustainable development, responding to disasters, and challenging injustice. Tearfund believe an end to extreme poverty is possible.
Your Neighbour is Thirsty
This campaign has been running over the past year and many churches across Scotland have engaged with it to learn more about the effects of climate change on the world's poorest communities, including this one in Afar, Ethiopia, where women have to walk up to 8 hours a day to access water so that their families do not go to bed thirsty. https://www.tearfund.org/campaigns/your-neighbour-is-thirsty
As part of the Your Neighbour is Thirsty campaign, Tearfund set up a community fundraiser people could take part in around World Water Day in March, where the organisation provided all the resources for our supporters to host their own Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, including a guide and video taking them through every step of what a ceremony such as this would involve. The fundraiser garnered a great response from churches and community groups (including young people, Girl's Brigade groups etc), who all thought it was a very unique cultural experience, but also a wonderful way to connect with others during lockdown. We still have this resource available for anyone who would like to host one and invite their friends to take part.
Spotlight on…
Burning down the house
Last year Tearfund and Youthscape surveyed 630 young Christians from across the UK, asking 14-19 year olds about their thoughts on the climate, the church and their faith. The research found that 9 out of 10 young people were concerned about the climate crisis, yet only 1 out of 10 felt their church was doing enough about it. To follow up on this research Tearfund have provided churches and youth leaders with a range of resources on how to respond to climate change.
