Young Citizen Advocates hands young people the power

Young people in Scottish secondary schools are being encouraged to focus on global issues as part of the Year of Young People in 2018, through IDEAS Young Citizen Advocates series of events.

Having launched with three successful events in 2017, some 300 secondary school pupils from at least eight different local authorities focussed on global citizenship education in different ways. The launch event involved young people discussing their priorities amongst the Year of Young People themes - and they focussed on the themes of equality; mental health and wellbeing; and participation, with guests from Amal Azzudin of the Glasgow Girls to the Scottish Parliament.

Subsequent events focussed on STEM, and how science can contribute to the achievement of the Global Goals for a more sustainable, fair world; and Modern Studies, looking at critical perspectives on aid and development.

In 2018 there will be a residential conference for Young Citizen Advocates as well as Parliamentary engagement.

Feedback on events so far has been positive.

One teacher from Glasgow said that the Young Citizen Advocates event they attended with pupils was:

"An excellent event for our pupils and very relevant to being a Global Citizen - the activities helped put the Global Goals into context." Another teacher said: "Mixing with students from other schools encourages our young people to be open to new ideas whilst questioning their own attitudes. It gives them a sense of their responsibility to be active, global citizens."

Each event has finished with every school signing a pledge to take action on one or more of the Global Goals, and these pledges will be followed up in due course.

They cover a range of themes, with one school in particular developing strong plans for the development of pupil peer support groups, and others looking at themes from gender equality to access to feminine health products.
